The winter season is off and running, and many of our teams are starting right where they left off last season. The girls' basketball team, who is coming off their first section championship in thirty years which included a deep state tournament run, are picking up where they left off. The girls captured their on tip-off tourny title, with wins over LIttlestown and Palmyra, before handing both Middletown and garden Spot a loss as well. The girls are 4-0 and have scored 218 points through four games.
The wrestling team seems to be in mid-season form already. The grapplers captured last year's District III championship and their fourth straight section title to go along with a Lancaster-Lebanon league title as well. The wrestlers opened last weekend with a dominating performance at the Solanco Mule Classic, winning over caesar Rodney (DE State Champs) and York power Dallastown. last night the Vikings opened section competition with an 83-0 shutout of Columbia. The Boy's Basketball team fell to Donegal in the season opener, and had to postpone their game with Middletown due to Middletown's state championship appearance in football. The boys are away at Conrad Weiser tonight and Annville Cleona on Friday before hosting Lebanon Catholic on Monday. The bowling team is in action on Friday vs Lancaster Mennonite. Taylor Urban Class Wars is upon us! Watch your back! It starts tomorrow! The four classes and teachers will compete against each other in various events to earn points. Whoever has the most points by the end of next Wednesday will win the WAR, being rewarded with a currently undecided prize (which will most likely be a movie where the students will be able to get out of periods 7, 8, and 9). You may have noticed that hall decorating, the first event, had occurred this past Friday. The controversial winning hall was that of the teacher’s, followed by the sophomores, seniors, juniors, and then the freshmen. You can also make Christmas Ornaments for the tree out front in the lobby to earn points (by Friday), but they most follow the parameters of your class. (SENIORS: Black Stars, JUNIORS: Blue Candy Canes, SOPHOMORES: Red Christmas Balls, FRESHMEN: White Snowflakes, and TEACHERS: Grey Snowmen). Don’t be absent! I don’t care how sick you are! Your class will get more points for having less absences. Penny Wars will start tomorrow at lunch, as well. You can donate nickels, dimes, quarters, or cash to OTHER jars to subtract greater amounts from their total or you can donate pennies to YOUR OWN jar to increase your total by one each. The money will be donated to the Wounded Warriors Project. Spirit Days will also be starting tomorrow. (WEDNESDAY: Holly Jolly Day, THURSDAY: Camouflage Day, FRIDAY: Holiday Character Day, MONDAY: Sweater Weather, FRIDAY: Class Colors- stated above) You can sign up for various competitions to earn your class points during your lunch period. The Pep-Rally will be held this Friday, in which you can also sign up for various competitions to earn points such as Tug of War, Guess That Carol, etc. Sign-ups for these events are outside of room 63. The points will be displayed and counted in the lunchroom next to the penny wars table. The junior/senior class play was held on November 18th and 19th in the HADPAC. The students put on a spectacular performance of Just Another High School Play. For those of you who missed out on a great show, here’s a small review and recap:
The play’s plot began as a high school drama club whose teacher vanished on show night, leaving them without any material to perform. Lucky for them, the stage manager and director put their wits together to dig out old scripts from different shows such as Hamlet, Little Women, and Romeo and Juliet. With lots of improvisation, satire, cast quirks, and no practice what so ever, it turns out to be a success! But of course, not without a small twist. It turns out that the stage manager kidnapped the stage director with intentions to steal the spotlight. The audience was both lively and entertained both nights of performance; the play received rounds of applause and laughter from those who attended. “I thought it was the best play I’d attended in several years. The kids that were in it really were able to show their personalities so well with how flexible it was. It was really good,” - Mr. Wallace. Overall, the amount of comedy and satirical material was portrayed in a great way. Good job juniors and seniors! Stay tuned for the spring musical. It’s 5:30 on a Monday evening. The wrestling room door swings open and out walks 33 athletes in a single file line. Sweat and blood across their faces. Tape and bandages barely hanging on. Exhaustion lines their faces and thin smiles hide behind grimacing fatigue. In a few weeks from now they will walk out of the same room, and march into the gymnasium ready to decimate the competition as they have done for many years. Yes, another winter is approaching, and with it comes wrestling season. Two things are for certain each winter: #1. It will be cold #2. The wrestling team will dominate. Last year’s season proved no different. The Vikings started off by winning just about every tournament they entered, made the finals of the National Duals in Virginia, won their fifth straight section title, captured the league championship, and went on to claim the first District Championship in school history. As if that wasn’t enough, they went on to win the Section II AA crown, the District III individual tourny, and put an unprecedented 13 wrestlers on the District 3 podium. Not bad fellas! This year hopes to bring more of the same. Coach Wallace like where the team is so far in the season. “We have a lot of work to do, but we are getting there. We want to win a district title and bring a state medal home. Plain and simple.” The team opens up this weekend at Solanco, before traveling to some of the top tournaments in the state and country. “We go to King of the Mountain this year as well as Hurricane. Both of these events are tougher than states,” Wallace added. If the schedule was not tough enough, the Vikings will travel to Cornell University on January 22 to take on the #20 team in the country Hilton, NY. The Vikings are home December 20 vs Lancaster Catholic, January 4 vs Annville-Cleona, January 14 at the NL Tournament, and February 11 vs Pequea Valley. Let’s get out and pack the gym and root the wrestlers on in what proves to be another exciting season of NL Wrestling. By: Taylor Urban
