With Advanced Placement Tests approaching, many students are preparing for exams that will have a significant impact on their education. This can be, of course, a very stressful experience. However, by following these simple tips and tricks, you can be more prepared and comfortable in taking your AP Test.
1. Study
This is the most beneficial way to prepare for one’s test. By reviewing the testing material for multiple weeks before your test, you can be able to grasp the concepts most efficiently. This can be done by reviewing previous tests/questions, using guided study AP books, practicing specific problems, etc. It is beneficial to work in study groups and review with others who are in your class. Ask your teacher for review materials and advice to make sure you are reviewing the major concepts that will most benefit you in taking the exam.
2. Answer the Questions You’re Sure About + Manage Time
During the test, by first completing the problems that you are most confident of, your
memory is being jogged about the general concepts and you are more likely to end up
remembering the remaining questions. You will also be able to be more comfortable
in knowing that you got some of the questions right during the strict time limits, rather
than working on or thinking about a long and hard problem when you could have been
answering multiple, easier ones. When you do have little time left, it is better to make sure that you answer all of the possible questions, even if you don’t know. There is a chance that you will get it right if you guess, so you should take that opportunity. Pace yourself when you’re taking the exam, as the time given is usually not enough, so you want to be able to excel the most with the time that you’re given.
3. Get Plenty of Sleep + Eat
Studies show that students who get more sleep perform better on tests and at school in
general. By getting enough sleep the night prior to the test, you are able to be well rested, healthy, and prepared to take your exam. Make sure you also eat a healthy breakfast to make yourself feel good and energized before your test. It is also beneficial to bring a snack and a water for the break of the test to maintain your energy and hydration during testing. (Also, bring back up batteries if you’re taking the Calculus Exam.)
4. Remain Positive
While taking the AP Exams can be a stressful experience, it is fundamental to stay positive. You are more likely to perform well with a sense of confidence and optimism, rather than if you were to assume that you will do poorly. It is better to go on with a positive attitude, knowing that you are capable of excelling on your test, then to look at the experience pessimistically.
Good Luck!
