Traditionally in the American society Valentine's day is celebrated with cards, chocolates, flowers, and a romantic evening eating in fancy restaurant. The Holiday honors many saints with the name Valentine and later was associated with Romantic love from the middle ages in England. The symbols of Valentine's Day are red and pink heart and images of Cupid. Cupid is a mythological creature who shoots arrows at people making them fall in love. It is a day where couples have the freedom to shower their loved ones with gifts and special surprises. Most of the world celebrates valentine's day but all in their own unique ways, for example France.
France is one of the most romantic places in the world and is also known for inventing the Valentine’s Day card, Charles, Duke of Orleans sent love letters to his wife while imprisoned and it has been a tradition ever since. France also has another event that happens on Valentine’s Day called loterie d’amour. Men and women would split up into two different houses that would face each other. The men would take turns calling a women from the other house, if the man was not satisfied with his women he would simply choose another. The women that remained would have a bonfire and burn anything that had to do with the man that broke her heart. The event eventually became so uncontrollable that the England government had to ban it.
Another Country that celebrates Valentine's Day differently than the U.S. is South Korea. South Korea celebrates it in three different holidays spread across the months of February, April, and March. From February 14th until March 14th the Women woo the men by getting them chocolates and different candles and candies. March 14th is when it is the men's turn to woo the Women. February 14th is Valentine's Day for them and March 14th is White day. They also have a day called Black day on April 14th for all the women who don't have a man to mourn.
England's Tradition is one that is full of love, hope, and joy. On the night of Valentine’s day the women place five leaves on their pillows. The leaves are soaked with rosewater and placed in the five corners and the center. At night they sleep on them to bring them good dreams and good luck that one day they will find a husband. They also have a Jack Valentine character which acts as Santa Clause. He comes on Valentine’s Day and leaves small candies and treats for the children to eat.
Although Countries celebrate Valentine's Day all differently each one is filled with love and hope of future love.
