Attention volleyball fans and NL students everywhere. If you aren’t already following the Northern Lebanon Girls Volleyball team, now’s time to get acquainted. To most, volleyball is seen as a secondary sport and is not played by many because it doesn’t come across as fun. Although I believe that the saying “You never know until you try it” applies to this game.
One of the most overlooked fall sports is girls volleyball. Back for their fall season, the girls volleyball team at Northern Lebanon has a lot of interest and hopes to draw crowds for their games this year.
The Lady Vikes have a total of 22 girls on their squad this year, returning strong a group from last year. The core group is led by senior RaeAnn Lessing, followed by juniors Bri Hossler and Kathryn Sweinhart. Sophomores Amelia Tinder, Megan DiAngeles and Willow Nester round up N. Lebanon’s varsity starters.
Some key players that contribute off the bench are seniors Brielle Bowman, Rachelle Kenney and Teigan Guirate and sophomore Amber Albright.
Currently the girls are 2-7 on the season, although they will continue to play their best volleyball. The team’s last win was against Lebanon last Monday, September 24th. An upside to the NLGVB’s season was a second place finish in Lebanon’s Cedar Classic Tournament a two weekends ago.
“We’re going to improve a lot...next week we play Octorara,” “We almost beat them, in our first game,” said setter Bri Hossler. She sounded confident that her team will pick up their game.
I asked the junior what she thinks the team needs to improve on the most. She responded with, “We need to play as a team, we need to work on our team work...Teamwork, being nice to each other and playing as a team instead of playing individually because it is a very team centered sport.”
NL played visiting Octorara this past Thursday and took a tough loss. “(We) just wanna win,” stated Hossler. “We played almost every team in our section, and lost,” she continued by saying that the team is not looking back on those games and wants to focus on winning them the next time they play those teams.
Hossler also mentioned some other games that her team hopes to redeem themselves against are Cocalico and Lancaster Catholic when the time comes.
The Girls Volleyball team definitely seems determined to turn their young team around in the second half is the season. Confidence is important no matter what sport you play in life. The Girls’ next game is against Conestoga Valley on October 8...good luck girls!
