It is remarkable to see what the movie got right. So many predictions came true, while others are still merely ideas. First of all let's start with the Cubs. A baseball team that at that time was historically struggling was predicted to win the World Series. Now although it appears that probably will not happen, it is important to note that the Cubs did in fact make the playoffs and are currently one of the final four teams left in baseball. Not too shabby. It is also worth noting that the movie predicted a baseball team in Florida, which we now have in the form of the Miami Marlins.
So what else did the movie get right? Plenty...and remarkable considering they were predicting 30 years into the future. Here are a few:
1. Our obsession with sequels. In one scene we see a movie display for Jaws 19. Obviously we did not have the luxury of seeing 19 of these classics, but we do seem to stretch everything into multiple book, movies, seasons, etc.
2. Hand held tablets. When the movie appeared we all wondered what this cool machine was. Now millions of Americans carry such a device in the form of an IPad or IPod. Who would have thought?
Hover boards. Lexus has created a hover board...it is not to the extent of the one Marty zips around in, but it is here nonetheless...
We are still waiting for the flying car, that even the Jetsons had in 80s. There still has not been a woman president, and fax machines do not litter the world. And thank goodness the double tie look has not taken off.
